Cross-Cultural Issues and Driver Requirements for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

Today, more and more Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are introduced on the automotive market. However, implementing technology to enhance driving safety requires careful attention to whom the user will be and in which traffic situations drivers need assistance from the systems. In this study naturalistic driving was recorded in China. Video clips with potentially dangerous traffic situations were evaluated by human factors experts. The results showed that the type of assistance drivers need in different situations highly depend on driver behavior, and that ADAS may cause confusion in situations where several systems may be competing for the driver’s attention and thereby increase the risk of an accident.
