Strategies for integrated and sustainable renovation: A stronger voice for architectural knowledge

The argument given in this chapter is the need for a holistic view of renovation in which different values of the built environment are respected and considered. Based on empirical studies, we have found that architectural knowledge could claim a central role in a multi-value approach to renovation in mediating and synthesising qualitatively different, and even opposing, values and interests. However, in order to influence the development of a consistent and much anticipated theory in alteration and redevelopment beyond the discipline of architecture, the argumentation of architectural knowledge needs to be strengthened in relation to other knowledge areas and interests.
